The Capitol Dome

The Capitol Dome

This project was organized by

The Capitol Dome is a magazine publication by the United States Capitol Historical Society – a nonpartisan, educational 501(3)c nonprofit organization, "chartered by Congress to educate the public on the history and heritage of the U.S. Capitol, its  institutions and the people who have served therein"

In October of 2022 I had the pleasure of producing the layout and graphics for the 59th volume of the magazine.

Designing the cover

Hence the saying, the cover is a very important part of a book - or in this case, a magazine. My goal was to give new life to the issue. Highlighting the powerful cover image, I took the inspiration from the full dome mask from the previous issue, slightly arching the photo at the top, leading the eye toward the title and giving a subtle brand accent.

I aimed to give the Society a potential template to work off of for later issues, with a consistent set of spacing and copy areas, and potential color variations with the new border.

Interior content

For the new issue I gave the magazine a consistent, simple font set using Jubilat as the display typeface and the classic Georgia for paragraphs. Jubilat's high-contrast, slab serif style makes it great for stimulating titles and headlines.

A leading challenge for this project was creating a layout that kept appropriate context for placement of imagery in relation to the story, while also filling whitespace and keeping headlines at the start of pages.
